Types of Vanilla

Each type of vanilla has its own unique flavour profile, which makes it important to choose the right type for your recipe

Vanilla Planifolia:

This is the most common variety, also known as Bourbon vanilla. It's prized for its intense vanilla flavor and aroma

  • Madagascar Vanilla: Often referred to as "Bourbon Vanilla" (named after the former name of Réunion Island, Île Bourbon), this is the most popular variety globally. It's known for its intense, rich vanilla flavor and aroma.

  • Indian Vanilla: These beans come from India and surrounding regions. They offer a sweet, creamy aroma with subtle floral notes.

  • Ugandan Vanilla: Vanilla beans from Uganda are known for their high vanillin content, leading to a strong and robust vanilla flavor.

Pompona:

Can be grown in various locations, including Madagascar and Guadeloupe. However, it's not as commercially cultivated as planifolia and might be harder to find.

  • Guadeloupe Vanilla: is a variety of vanilla bean with a high oil content and a unique aromatic profile. It has notes of maraschino, liquorice, tobacco leaf, and wood, with a light floral background

Tahitian:

Tahitian vanilla is unique among these hand-grown varieties, as it is a hybrid of two species, vanilla, and tahitensis. It has a thinner stem and oval-shaped leaves, and is dark green in colour. The aroma is floral with undertones of ripe fruit for a deep and rich taste of cherry chocolate, licorice, and caramel.
